In this map the total number of students (size of circles), and the gender balance have been split between universities and other higher education institutions (colour scales). On average 57.7 percent of the students at higher education institutions are female. Norwegian Harstad and Kautokeino together with Akureyri (Iceland) are the municipalities with, in relative terms, the most female students (all over 75 percent). All ten municipalities which have more male than female students have either a technical university or a (university) college focusing on maritime or forestry studies. The female share is highest in the rather peripheral universities and especially in Akureyri (Iceland) and Rovaniemi. The highest share of male students can be found in cities with a technical university and especially in Lappeenranta (Finland) with 70.7 percent male students.
