Nordregio present at SUME conference in Vienna

On May 3rd 2011, researchers from Nordregio participated in the international conference Urban Development 2050 – Planning resource-efficient cities in Vienna. The conference was a central dissemination event in the SUME project (Sustainable Urban Metabolism for Europe) and was organized by the project's lead partner, the Austrian Institute for Regional Studies and Spatial Planning (ÖIR).

The conference hosted approximately 200 participants, including urban planners and administrators, urban development policy makers, climate change researchers and NGOs. The theme for the conference was "Can urban planning and strategic management of urban development/ growth /change contribute to greater resource efficiency of urban areas?"

Patrick Galera-Lindblom from Nordregio gave a presentation on the results of a so called Metabolic Impact Assessment for the first phase of the Stockholm Royal Seaport in Hjorthagen. The presentation showed how this urban development project has been conceived within the context of the City of Stockholm and some of the likely impacts on energy demand. The presentation contained illustrations of the intervention area made available by the City's Administration. The main outcomes of the project were also presented by project members and a number of stakeholders from European cities, such as Vienna, Munich, Newcastle, Oporto, Athens and Stockholm, presented their views and approaches to the questions at hand.
