REKENE

"Regional Trajectories to the Knowledge Economy - Nordic-European comparisons" aims at contributing to understanding of a key sector in each region and contributes to interaction between key regional actors. Better understanding of how knowledge is developed within businesses, how it is transferred, and the role of the regional context of different actors can contribute to increased regional competitiveness.

The project is collaborative with teams of researchers and practitioners in 7 Nordic regions. It operates at the regional level combining in-depth work in firms and in their regional context of public actors, HE institutions, networks of firms and other actors. It is a spin-off of the 6 Framework project EURODITE, which facilitates comparison with over 20 case studies across Europe. REKENE's main objective is to understand the role and development of knowledge in the regional economies of Nordic and European regions in order to inform policies and policy makers, and develop recommendations on regional innovation policy.

REKENE addresses the problem that despite many initiatives to promote and stimulate innovation, Norden is still lagging behind the target of the Lisbon and Gothenburg summits. Developing a knowledge-based economy is vital to be competitive in the global economy. Regions are crucial in this process. The project operates at the regional level combining in-depth work in firms and in their regional context of public actors, HE institutions, networks of firms and other actors.
