Ageing of the population is a well-known fact in the Nordic countries. The increase of people entering retirement age will hit the Nordic countries rather heavily during this decade. Compared to the European Union average, the share of elderly labour force population is larger in the Nordic countries. In contrast, the share of children and youth (up to age 24) is higher in Norden than in EU. This means that relatively large numbers of people are not only leaving the labour force, but fewer young people are coming into the labour force. This means that a low potential for replacement of the outflow of older generations by the inflow of young generations exists on Nordic level, although with large regional variations.
