Major immigration flows to Sweden 2000-2009

Average annual flows above 1000 people by country of origin

image description

Migration flows by country of origin are of growing interest in the Nordic Region due to the recent unprecedented inflows of migrants.  There are also interesting differences between the Nordic countries with respect to the dominant countries of origin of migrants and the size of inflows.

During the 2000s, and compared to the other Nordic countries, a large portion of immigrant inflows to Sweden were from Iraq. Sweden also experienced substantial inflows from a wide range of countries, mainly in Europe and Asia, during the period. Despite appearing diverse at the time, this selection of countries pales in comparison to those which would be seen in the following decade.
