All settlements with less 5,000 inhabitants are shown as dots while settlements with 5,000 or more inhabitants are shown as circles with an area equivalent to the population number. The colours indicate the changes, with yellow showing places where no changes have taken place, while red indicates those places with a declining population, and blue places with a population increase. Most of the smaller places in Fennoscandia and Russia have been declining markedly in size while a substantial number of the larger places have also suffered the same fate. The places which have experienced major growth in Fennoscandia and NW Russia are places where educational opportunities are available. Similar patterns are shown in the North Atlantic region where Torshavn, Nuuk, Sisimiut and Torshavn have been the big receivers. (Megatrends report, p.22)
