This map shows the Euthrophication levels in the Baltic Sea during two periods, 2003-2007 and 2007-2011. From 2003–2007, the Gulf of Bothnia and the westernmost parts of the Baltic Sea experienced moderate or even good levels of eutrophication. In contrast, the Gulf of Finland and the Central parts of the BSR experienced poor levels. From 2007-2011 almost entire BSR experienced poor eutrophication levels, with the exception of coastal areas in the Gulf of Bothnia. In contrast, the Gulf of Finland and the Central parts of the BSR experienced poor levels. Despite all efforts in agriculture to minimise phosphate entries over the last decades, eutrophication processes in the Baltic Sea continued. This is partly due to the late onset of long-term effects (phosphates are carried by rivers into the Baltic Sea), partly because of self-reinforcing processes within the Baltic Sea itself.
