Which Nordic municipalities take the lead on the Agenda 2030?

New Nordic project will identify frontrunners among Nordic municipalities that are implementing the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals on the local level!

In September 2015, the UN General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda with its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to promote economic, ecological and social sustainability in all countries. The Nordic countries are committed to implementing the agenda and have adopted a joint programme entitled Generation 2030 under the auspices of the Nordic Council of Ministers to facilitate Nordic cooperation and address common challenges in achieving the SDGs (see more in report Bumps on the road to 2030).

While the implementation of the 2030 Agenda is high on the political agenda, there is a limited knowledge about the actions taken by Nordic municipalities. The project, carried out by Nordregio, will contribute to the Generation 2030 programme by looking into the implementation of the SDGs at the local level. Through a mapping exercise Nordregio will:

- identify Nordic municipalities that have shown particular ambition in addressing the Agenda 2030.

- bring together the municipalities in a seminar, hosted at Nordregio (Stockholm) on 9. May 2018, to facilitate knowledge exchange and inspire collaboration on how to best implement the SDGs on the local level.

- publish a booklet in summer 2018 that describes the activities of municipalities supporting SDG implementation, the challenges they face and key recommendations. The booklet will be promoted through social media as well as at national and international events. The mapping will also provide useful input for the continuing work of the Nordic Council of Ministers.

Nordregio is looking for municipalities which take a systematic approach to implementing the Agenda 2030. As a project participant, the municipality’s SDG efforts will be highlighted in the booklet. The municipality will also be invited to join the seminar at Nordregio.
