Population density in the European regions shows a diverse pattern between north and south, and urban and rural regions. European Commision defines sparsely-populated areas as NUTS 3 regions with a population density of fewer than 12.5 inhabitants per km². Many of the Arctic regions also belongs to these sparsely populated regions.
