This map shows demographic vulnerability in Nordic-Baltic regions based on the indicator gender balance of the total population. Under this indicator, regions are deemed to be vulnerable when the gender ratio falls below 103.65 – that is, when there are less than 103.65 females per 100 males. The majority of Nordic regions have a gender ratio below this threshold (shortage of females), with the exception of Southern Finland. Gender ratios above 103.65 can also be observed in all regions in Latvia and Lithuania.
Gender balance of the total population is one of 10 indicators used to measure demographic vulnerability in the Nordic-Baltic Region. The map “Nordic-Baltic Demographic Vulnerabilities”, takes in all 10 indicators to provide an overall picture of demographic vulnerabilities at the regional level.
