Regional Innovation

Sustainable development of the Nordic region is dependent upon innovation and entrepreneurship at the regional and local level. Nordic regions are part of an open global economy, but also base much of their growth on local commodities and resources. On this page, you can learn about our latest projects related to the regional innovation.

GRETA – Green infrastructure: enhancing biodiversity and ecosystem services for territorial development

The collaborative ESPON project GRETA aims to develop a comprehensive knowledge base for enhancing green infrastructures to benefit territorial development in different European regions and cities. Find out more about GRETA.

Innovative and Resilient Regions  

The Nordic thematic group for innovative and resilient regions 2017-2020 aims to develop policies and new solutions to the challenges that the Nordic regions face when it comes to resilience, innovative capacity and skills provision, while focusing on green transition, smart specialisation and digitalisation. Digitalisation as a tool for sustainable Nordic regional development

Digital technologies have the potential to dramatically transform our lives. Despite this, research providing direct insight into regional governance in the digital age is limited. This project seeks to address this gap, exploring the priorities, challenges and opportunities regions face when working with digitalisation. Find out more about the project.

Regional Economic and Social Resilience

Regional resilience has become a hot topic for policy-making, with assistance regarding social and economic transformation at the core of the debate. The Regional Economic and Social Resilience project focuses on identifying what shocks the Nordic regions are particularly vulnerable to and how to strengthen resilience, both to anticipate and react to these disturbances. Sino-European innovative green and smart cities (SiEUGreen)

SiEUGreen aspires to enhance the EU-China cooperation in promoting urban agriculture for food security, resource efficiency and smart, resilient cities. Nordregio is leader of the work package: “Support to Institutional and Social Structures for creating resilient cities with urban agriculture” and contributes to other working papers as well. HIGHER - Better Policy Instruments for High Innovation Projects in the European Regions 

Nine European institutions collaborate in the framework of the Interreg Europe Program for the implementation of HIGHER. The project has the objective to improve the innovation framework and the smart specialization strategy of different EU regions. HIGHER will analyse and exchange experiences and good practices on the management and implementation of regional policy instruments designed to promote the innovation projects under the collaboration between research centers, industry and public authorities. Social Green - Regional Policies towards Greening the Social Housing Sector 

The Social Green project intends to address the issue of green social housing in order to contribute to reduce the GHG emissions as well as to reduce the fuel poverty indicators in EU regions towards a lower carbon economy. Find out more about Social Green.

RELOCAL (Resituating the local in cohesion and territorial development)

Location matters. Where one is born and raised (still) determines to a considerable extent one's opportunities and constrictions and it also impacts on one's personality. After a long period of catching-up for most of the disadvantaged regions, inequalities among regions within Member States are now growing again. Find out more about RELOCAL.

BSR Stars S3 - Stimulating smart specialization ecosystem through engaging SMEs in open innovation processes 

The concept of smart specialisation has challenged European regions to establish innovation driven development strategies that focus on areas of strength and competitive advantage. The BSR Stars S3 project seeks to enhance growth opportunities in the Baltic Sea Region, focusing on the bio-/circular and digital economy fields. The main objective is to improve capacities of the regions to implement regional smart specialization strategies (RIS3) through tools and methods that engage bio- and circular business and research, support management of innovation processes and enhance transnational cooperation opportunities. REGINA 

REGINA - Regional Innovation in the Nordic Arctic and Scotland with a special focus on regions with large-scale projects.  The project aims to reduce the vulnerability and increase the preparedness of small communities in remote and sparsely populated areas of the Nordic Arctic and Scotland towards the development – or closing-down – of large-scale, resource-based industries. ESPON PROFECY 

The acronym PROFECY is derived from the words Processes, Features and Cycles, which sum up key aspects of Inner Peripheries which, despite the increasing popularity of the term in the regional policy discourse, remain poorly understood. The main purpose of this project, is to develop an evidence base and a conceptual framework which can provide firm foundations for policy recommendations which are both broadly applicable and tailored to the needs of a range of specific contexts, in order to prevent further decline and to enhance territorial cohesion. Advancing the bioeconomy transition in the Nordic Region (BioWiseTrans)

In the long run the aim is to maintain and develop a unique transdisciplinary (interdisciplinary and inclusive of stakeholders) network to study and propel the transition towards a new primarily land and biomass-based bioeconomy. Find out more about BioWiseTrans

Nordic working group for green growth – innovation and entrepreneurship 

The aim of the working group was to contribute to policy development on green growth, innovation and entrepreneurship in the Nordic countries. The working group focused on the regional potential of green growth and what regional actors could do to promote green growth, bioeconomy, industrial symbiosis etc. The results have been summarised in a synthesis report.
