Rural Development

The rural regions of the Nordic countries comprise an abundance of natural resources and a big bioeconomy potential. Sustainable development of these rural regions is important for the entire Nordic region. On this page, you can learn about our latest projects related to rural development.

Evaluation of Åland Rural Programme 2014-2020

The project aims to contribute to the better targeted support for rural development of Åland within the framework of the programme and to support a common learning process regarding to the monitoring and evaluation. Find out more about the project.

Sustainable Rural Development

In the Nordic region, there are increasing regional imbalances between urban and rural areas in terms of population change, economic development, access to services, and social outcomes. The Nordic thematic group on sustainable rural development 2017-2020 explores these development paths and policies supporting or mitigating the changes. Find out more about the thematic group for sustainable rural development.

MAMBA (Maximised Mobility and Accessibility of Services in Regions Affected by Demographic Change)

The MAMBA project aims to promote "people-to-service" and "service-to-people" mobility solutions in rural areas, as well as residents' participation in rural mobility design processes. MAMBA is funded by Interreg Baltic Sea Region. Demographic change and limited public finances endanger the accessibility of services, goods and social life in many rural areas in the Baltic Sea Region (BSR). It is becoming increasingly difficult to ensure not only individual "people-to-service" mobility, but also the supply of "service-to-people" mobility (e.g. home care for elderly or various delivery services) in these sparsely populated regions. The MAMBA project aims to improve both dimensions of mobility through a number of activities. Find out more about MAMBA.

SEMPRE

SEMPRE promotes empowerment in social service provision in rural areas of the Baltic Sea Region (BSR). Social service providers such as welfare and public sector organisations, NGOs and social enterprises are encouraged and enabled to involve end-users – namely members of disadvantaged groups such as single parents, the elderly or migrants – in the development and delivery of social services. Find out more about SEMPRE.

TRIBORN - Triple Bottom Line

Outcomes for Bioenergy Development and Innovation in Rural Norway TRIBORN is a Norwegian-led research project investigating how to increase production of bioenergy in ways that promote sustainable development in rural areas. It aims to understand and foster systems for bioenergy innovation and related support policies that can produce positive social, economic and environmental outcomes in rural areas and promote the achievement of national bioenergy targets for Norway. Local Food: Formation of local food market

In recent years, we have witnessed the emergence of alternative food supply chains and markets due to important changes in consumer perceptions of food and farming. Short food supply chains (SFSCs) can act as a driver of change and a method to increase sustainability, trust, equality and growth in agricultural and food sectors, but also more generally benefit business development in rural areas, as well as have positive social and health related outcomes. SFSCs include different practices such as farmers’ markets, on-farm sales, consumer cooperatives, direct internet sales, etc. Find out more about the Local Food project.
